The Gulls go Green and Silver! We are very proud to have been
awarded a Silver Award by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).
The first in Looe. We had a rigorous day's visit by two inspectors
from the GTBS. They look at everything, even inside our fridge! We
are very committed to the green ethos and there are always ways in
which we can improve.
As you will undoubtedly be able to appreciate, Cornwall is a
beautiful county. The mix of the diverse coastal and rural
landscapes makes it very special and unique. Here at the Gulls we
are very conscious of the need to reduce our impact on the
environment, but without compromising our guest's holiday
experience. South East Cornwall is an area of outstanding natural
beauty and we strive to improve on reducing our carbon emissions.
Guests who visit this wonderful part of the Country can help as
well. There are lots of small ways that both you as our visitors,
and us in our communities, can try to minimise the 'footprint' we
leave behind us - just because you are on holiday doesn't mean you
can't do your bit to help us help the environment.

5 Ways
to be the Best Sort of Visitor!
Small Steps. . .Big Impact! |
|
 |
1. Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle
In Cornwall we take our recycling very seriously, as we hope you
do at home! Say no to packaging wherever possible, especially
plastic bags. You will find recycling banks in most main car
parks across the area. In Cornwall we work hard to recycle all
we can. In your wardrobe you will find an environmentally
friendly Jute bag. All we ask is that you put all your
recyclable waste in the bag - we will do the rest. If you want
to take it out shopping please do - but please remember to bring
it back. If you like them so much you would like to buy one they
last forever, proceeds to the COAST charity - more on COAST
later. |

2. Reduce traffic: walk, cycle
or use public transport
Walking and cycling are great ways to see the area without
adding to traffic. Use public transport if you need to travel to
your start point, but try exploring near to where you are
staying - there are some fantastic places to see right on your
doorstep, travelling by boat, bus and train! There are more and
more fully accessible routes becoming available. For information
on ferry, bus and train times please visit the Cornwall County
Council website at
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/ and go to the Visiting
page. |

3. Stay Local, Eat Local, Buy
Local, See Local
Support local producers and services - this way your visit has a
real benefit to the communities of Cornwall. And you get to see
and taste the real quality that Cornwall offers. Visit Farmers
Markets, farm shops, village stores, pubs and cafes. Much of our
distinctive culture is evident in the hundreds of community
events that happen throughout the year and are well worth
supporting – and the food and drink in and around Looe is simply
fantastic. We can certainly give you our favorite
recommendations. |

 |
4. Chill out – switch off….
Enjoy a fabulous, light touch holiday…..switch off lights; only
put towels out for laundry that need washing. We will
gladly wash your towels daily if you wish but usually we will
change them every three days; every single effort helps protect
and enhance our beautiful environment. It takes a moment and
it’s all worth it! |
|
|
|
 |
5. Follow the Countryside Code:
respect – protect – enjoy.
The Countryside Code reminds visitors to protect plants and
animals; take litter away; leave gates and property as you find
them; keep dogs under close control; consider other people and
users when visiting the countryside. |

For our part, here
at the Gulls we continually making improvements. As our
equipment has irreparably broken down we have replaced items
with Grade A energy ratings and yes, when our light bulbs fail
we have replaced them with the energy saving bulbs - look to
check! Some of the low energy bulbs are getting attractive now.
We'll keep you up-to-date with our progress - every little bit
helps!
We are also members of the Cornwall Sustainable Tourism Project
- known as the COAST Project. As members we get lots of useful
tips on how to save energy, as well as ideas and places for you
to visit, and much more. You can visit them too at
http://www.cstn.org.uk/ . Also, since the summer of 2008
Lorraine has become an Ambassador for the COAST Project which
means she shall be taking on a more active role in spreading the
green word.
We are trying to reduce the impact that our business has on the
local environment. One way we can do this is by encouraging
people to neutralise their carbon dioxide emissions too. Why
not take the train next time? In return we will reward you with
a 10% discount on the cost of your booking with us! Go on, give
it a try - liberate yourselves, leave the car at home.
Enjoy your
holiday - thank you for reading! |
